Why we study teen depression?

Depression is very common in adolescents. Around 7% of boys and 20% of girls aged 12-17 years report experiencing a period of depression in the past year alone. Teens who are depressed may feel sad or irritable, or they may lose interest in activities they used to enjoy.

Up to 70% of teens feel better after treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). However, 30-50% of teens either do not feel better after treatment or still have some stubborn symptoms that get in the way of their lives. It is therefore critical to continue to do research on depression so we can help more teens feel their best.
